Florida Teens Who Tortured and Killed Baby Gopher Tortoise Arrested

The two Florida teenagers who lit a gopher tortoise on fire and killed it by stomping on it have been arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Jennifer Greene, 18, and Danielle Dionne, 15, were charged with the third degree felony after a video they posted online of themselves torturing and then killing a baby gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) went viral and caused massive outrage online. They are both being held on $55,000 bond.

A healthy adult gopher tortoise.

If convicted, Greene could receive up to five years in prison, 60 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. Dionne is a juvenile and her case will be prosecuted in juvenile court.  The gopher tortoise is listed as threatened.
